This is one of the main reasons I’ve been on a sabbatical from IG since May, and I really don’t miss it. It’s also why I started my 365 no buy challenge, 215 days in and I’m the most creative I’ve ever been with my wardrobe. I feel really at home in my clothes and appreciate the mental clarity of being able to determine why I like what I like, vs being told what I should like if that makes sense?

Ok this is AMAZING. I need to do this!!! Even for a month haha. I have more in my closet than usual right now and it makes getting dressed way harder you’d think it would be the opposite. Easier to get creative without the noise for sure

Completely agree with this, I stopped sharing on instagram a few years ago…I was just done, and wanted my anonymity back, I’m a private person in general and despite it being lucrative it felt like it was machine that wanted to much from me. I do enjoy sharing, and helping others with fashion, home decor ect, but have really enjoyed the peace of stepping away from being so entangled with social media more! Substack has been a breath of fresh air, I can share a little here and there but there’s no pressure, and alot of privacy.

In the real world (not on social media), how does one kindly not reveal the source of their item when asked?

It’s like you read my mind!

Maybe it's the circles you move in, but most of my friend's are not on social media, or, they have a profile but never post (like myself). Granted, they are all at least age 38 and married (or getting divorced) with kids, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

And the Olsen twins: I can bet you my bottom dollar that it's their celebrity that helps people think they look stylish. The last time I noticed them, they dress like they are on the streets and in clothes 3 sizes too big. I mean, I've seen actual homeless people dress very similar, and NO ONE thinks they are stylish. It's the context, the celebrity of it all. Just my 2c.

You’re wrong about the Olsen twins, unfortunately.

Google lens is part of this too. You can identify items with a rudimentary photo.

* this resonates* I’m kind of on my journey of leaving Instagram, I want to shop my own closet and create more than I consume. I’m excited to document outfit formulas and touch grass and be inspired by living. If 2025 women become more mysterious, I’m okay with that! Resource sharing can extend to so many different areas outside of fashion.

Syd, I love this. We've lost the power of taking inspiration and making it our own, finding our own twist to it. I've talked about this with a very small group of people who get it. Beautifully said!

A 100% agree

Such a great article, I agree with what you wrote and that was a nice reminder.

I’m not following many brands or influencers on social media and I get the most inspiration from Pinterest where usually there’s not an entire outfit linked or from seeing people walking on the street or actually meeting new people at events.

It’s important to remain a bit individual :)

100%. wish we could go back sometimes. it’s hard to not share everything when you’re seeing everyone share everything! thank you for this reminder/reality check for me.
